The Bible says that you can’t serve God and money and a more modern translation, you can’t serve MasterCard and the Master. You can only serve one. The kingdom of God has a lot to say about money. It’s not bad to have money but it’s bad to have money having you.
Luke 12: 13-21 states “Then someone called from the crowd, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me. Jesus replied, Friend who made me judge over you to decide such things? Then he said, Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own. Then he told them a story: A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. He said to himself, what should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops. Then he said, I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I will have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. And I’ll sit back and say to myself, my friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry! But God said to him, you fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for? Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
Real riches in life are not measured by what we own. If that were the case, the actors in Hollywood would be the happiest and most successful people in the world. The trouble with America is that if we don’t have something that we want and instead of waiting until we have the money, we get into debt with credit in order to get what we want. We are also stingy in that we crave to save instead of living to give. We need to be able to give some of our money into the kingdom of God. The good life is not about getting rich and accumulating wealth.
Proverbs 22:1 states, “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.”
The life style of the rich and famous in Hollywood is not our model for success. God says that he wants us to trust him for what we need in life and for us to not worry. God doesn’t want money to have us but he does want us to have a rich relationship with him and to walk in his favor.
Luke 12:22-26 “Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said, That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life, whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing. Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds! Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things?”
There is an old gospel hymn that was song by actress-singer Ethel Waters called “His Eye is in the Sparrow.” The lyric go like this: “Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come, Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home, When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.Refrain I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.”
God doen’t want our hearts to be troubled by the cares of this life and if we would just rest in his goodness and trust him to care for us like the sparrows, then doubts and fears would leave. Jesus will always be there for you and he is your constant friend. So next time you see a sparrow remember his eye is also on you.
