When I was growing up as a child there was one western on TV that I used to watch called “Have Gun Will Travel.” The hero in the show was a paid gunslinger named Paladin who traveled the west and came into our home every Saturday night. The slogan can also be used in the spiritual realm about how trouble has a way of traveling into each of our lives. Everyone who breathes air will have trouble in this life and how you handle trouble determines the difference between being a loser or a winner.
In warfare the good part is winning the war and defeating the enemy but people really don’t understand warfare in the spiritual realm. Some of us have never picked up a weapon. We never started the war but the devil did.
A simple definition of warfare is found in John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble but take heart! I have overcome the world.”
One way to get rid of spiritual warfare is to serve the enemy but that answer isn’t always a guarantee because the devil doesn’t really care about his own. Living in this world you will have trouble and places like Mayberry with Andy and Opie Taylor only exist in heaven. Your troubles in life won’t go away but the good news is that Jesus will be by your side in troubled times.
Ephesians 6:10-12 states “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
When we war and fight against people in the flesh, we are trying to solve our problems in our own strength, independent of God. Also most of the battles we fight begin inside us and the real battlefield is in our minds. We need to let the Holy Spirit help us when we fight battles and not depend on our own strength and abilities. The greatest battle that we fight in life is not against sin but independence.
In Romans 7, it talks about wanting to do good and keep the commandments but the harder we try we fail. In Romans 8 it talks about trusting God and not in your own strength because sin is stronger than your will. The only thing that can over come sin is when we walk in the Spirit.
Romans 8:1-4 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life has set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.”
For those who are presently in a battle, the best advice that I could give you is not to surrender to temptation or the enemy but to surrender to God. God is only a prayer away and will always be there when you need him. Once you surrender your life to God and ask him to take control, he will help you in the battle. Lastly, the best way to win the victory in spiritual warefare is to find a good church to attend. Everyone needs a pastor and other believers for prayer support and encouragement.
