This week I would like to look at what it takes to have a closer walk with God. There is an old church hymn called “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”

The verse goes like this: “I am weak but thou art strong; Jesus, keep me from all wrong; I’ll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk close to thee. Just a closer walk with thee, grant it, Jesus, is my plea, daily, walking close to thee, let it be, dear Lord, let it be.”

The first thing we need to realize is that the confidence we have in tomorrow is rooted in our walk we have today. The Bible says, “Broad is the road that leads to destruction but narrow is the path that leads to eternal life.”

A path is a trail or road that has already been blazed by someone else and the Lord Jesus has already walked the path that we need to follow.

The Bible has a long list of people who have walked with God. Enoch walked with God for 365 years; Noah walked with God, and so did Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David and the list goes on.

A healthy marriage includes a husband and wife who walk together through life. The key to this close walk with your spouse is spending time together and communicating. The same holds true for our walk with God. Walking with God requires that we be tentative to His words.

The starting place for a closer walk always begins with salvation as stated in John 3: 16. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

We start our walk with God just like in a marriage when you say, “I do.” The second ingredient to walking closer to God is to study the word of God, the Bible. As a baby Christian you need to feed on the word like newborns who desire milk. You also need to see yourself as a spiritual being and have no confidence in the flesh.

I Peter 2:2-3 states, “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”

The word of God needs to become part of you and the greatest Bible that you could ever have is the bible that you have in your heart. The third ingredient for a closer walk with God requires that you have your mind renewed by the word of God.

Romans 12:2 states, “Do not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

The ways of the world are like a mold and if you follow the world you will be molded and conformed to that image. Christians have to live in the world but we don’t have to be like the world. The quickest way to get into deception is to stop walking with God.

I know some people who believe going to church every Sunday and Wednesday night will make you have a closer walk but just because you go to church doesn’t mean you will have a closer walk with God. In order to have a closer walk you have to do the things that God tells you to do.

A closer walk requires that you walk with the Lord every day of the week not just on Sundays. You can’t hoot with the owls on Saturday night and then expect to fly like an eagle on Sunday morning. You will become more like him by staying focused on him but remember that apart from God you can’t change your life. The change has to come by the spirit. This summer make the best of your time by having a closer walk with Him.
