Van Vleck Independent School District is taking one more step towards making the school district ecology friendly and green by retrofitting nine buses with quality air control. The school district received the grants from the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality Agency.
“The grant was provided by the Texas Clean School Bus Program and didn’t cost the district one cent,” said Van Vleck ISD Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Clary. “The changes made to the buses has made a difference in the quality of the air in our county and it also sends a message to the county that Van Vleck is a environmental friendly district.”
She said the school district received two grants from the TCEQA totaling $69,110. The catalytic converters were installed by a company from Corpus Christi and took two days to install.
Clary said that now when she gets behind a bus it doesn’t have a bad smell because the emissions are cleaner. The superintendent said they will have to wait and see how it affects gas mileage, but the immediate pay back is cleaner air. Matagorda County is not a county that has to have emission control testing of its vehicles, but they received the grant to help protect the environment, she said.
The Van Vleck ISD school board accepted the grants for retrofitting the buses by a unanimous decision at the district’s monthly school board meeting at the Van Vleck ISD administration building.
