Andrea Hawkins was in disbelief.
Reading an e-mail she had received, she wondered if it was a fake.
“This is just crazy,” she explained.
Hawkins recently was selected by the Amateur Softball Association of America Women’s National Team selection committee to be part of the player pool for 2010.
If selected, Hawkins will compete in the Pan Am Junior Women's World Championship in Bogota, Colombia, and also the IX ISF Junior Women's World Championship in Cape Town, South Africa during the next two years.
Hawkins did not want to mention she had been selected to her friends for fear that all this was a prank by someone.
“It is still so surreal, doesn’t feel real at all,” she said.
But with the shock comes determination. She has been preparing by playing softball every day.
Andrea has a great work ethic, a great attitude, and a great spirit, said softball head coach Greg Horn.
“I am very honored to be working with a player of this magnitude. I know she will do well at the tryout,” he said.
Hawkins is a center field with the Ladycats softball team and is also part of the Texas Impact Gold team that competes throughout the United States.
A total of 43 other high school students from across the United States will be trying out in June at the Olympic Training Center, Chula Vista, Calif.
Having the opportunity to try out is amazing opportunity, she said.
“I want to be able to represent the school and the United States,” she said.
Hawkins has committed to play softball for the University of Alabama in 2012 and major in Kinesiology.
