A.J. Mangum has competed in three World Association of Bench Press and Dead Lift Powerlifing competitions since WABDL National Collegiate Competition which was held in February this year. He has been keeping Matagorda County on the map with his outstanding performance in the deadlift. Mangum has been training for these competitions at Fit for Life Gym.

In March, Mangum competed in the Texas State Bench Press and Dead Lift competition in Humble. He weighed in at 171 pounds and competed in the junior men 20 to 25 age division. He won first place in the Bench Press with a lift of 270 and first place in the dead lift with a lift of 650.2. he received first place trophies in both the bench press and dead lift and was also presented a sword for winning top honors as the best dead lifter.

In June, Mangum competed in the WABDL Houston Open. He placed first place in the bench press 272.5 pounds and first place in the dead lift with a lift of 633.7 pounds. He received first place trophies for both contests.

Mangum was invited to participate in the Southern Regional Bench Press and Dead Lift competition which was hosted by the president of the association, Gus Rethwisch and Alex Calvo of heavy Hitters Gym in Dallas. This event was held at the Crown Plaza Hotel Dallas in July. He competed in both the junior men and the weight class and the open men division. He placed first in the bench press juniors men and received a new Texas record for the open men division. He then came back and broke his newly set Texas record lift with a lift of 672 pounds. At this time, Mangum had deadlifted more than anyone else at the meet, so he tried to break his current world record of 706 pounds, which he holds in the Junior Mens 20 to 25 age division. At the end of the competition, he received trophies for first place in the junior men 181 pound weight class bench press, first place in the junior men weight class dead lift and first place in the open men division lift. He also received top honors as best dead lifter.

Mangum is a 2007 graduate of Van Vleck High School and holds a State Dead Lift Record. He has been lifting for WABDL competitions since 2007 as a teenager. Mangum holds numerous state, national and world records in powerlifiting. His current record in the junior men 20 to 25 age division weight class is 706 pounds, which was set at the 2009 WABDL world championships in Reno, Nevada. He is continuing to workout hard at the Fit for Life Gym in anticipation of breaking his current world record at the 2010 WABDL World Championships in Las Vegas in Novermber.
