Editor of the Matagorda Advocate
It's no secret I moved to Bay City the second my editor offered me the job.
It was an opportunity of a lifetime. To be the editor of a newspaper? It's like someone asking me to jump and me asking, "How high?"
Lately I have been reflecting on my journey through my journalism world. One I thought I would never venture through.
As a kid, I remember asking my parents to buy the local newspaper and I would read through articles. I also watched the 10 o’clock news religiously. I wanted to do what those people were doing – tell a story.
But life got in the way, some of which I will not write about, I am a writer but still consider my past life private.
So I settled for a career I was not happy with. Sure, the pay was great – but was not fulfilling.
A road trip that lead me on a tour of the CNN Studios in Atlanta changed everything on a cold February morning in 2007.
Part of the tour is to look over the newsroom and watch a live broadcast of the news.
It was then when I asked myself, “Why not?”
To make a long story short – a month later, I left my job at Dell. That morning, determined to walk out of my well established career at Dell, I listened to Bon Jovi’s – “It’s My Life,” as the theme song on my way to end my career.
By June I was in Journalism school and ready to roll.
As fate would have it, a month later I got a part-time job as a reporter for the local weekly newspaper.
Then by 2009, another lucky break, an interview with the Victoria Advocate. But we all know how that worked out – I am now an editor.
The point of this entry is this – don’t ever let fear get in the way of your dreams and passion. Go for what you know is yours. If you dream it, make it happen.
