For junior Chazmin Franklin, being captain of the varsity volleyball team means pulling out all the stops.
The LadyCat middle blocker prepares for each game by studying the opposing teams they play, using their weaknesses to take control of the game.
“I like to contemplate and think about what each player is going to do in the game, I study their weaknesses and use that to our advantage,” she said.
Franklin has been on the varsity volleyball team since her freshman year.
She hopes for a better season then last year.
The LadyCats placed last in the district last year out of six teams.
“I want this team to strive to be the best and that will be done by working hard,” she said.
This year, Coach Terri Klaiber is preparing the team by focusing on teamwork.
“We are working on things I saw as a deficient last year that we ran out of time to work on,” said Klaiber. “This season the girls are wanting this better and we have more experience from each player."
Along with teamwork, the LadyCats are working more on transition plays.
Last year the team had a lot of talent, said senior Kalyn Trevino.
“But we didn’t do anything with it. This year everyone is keeping their heads up and I think that is a very important aspect of the game,” she said. “It is important to have your teams back you up in the court."
This year the LadyCats bring back nine members from last year’s team.
Trevino said she is prepared for the season. She has played volleyball for six years and is determined to bring a winning season to the team.
We have a lot more team chemistry this year, Trevino said.
“That is really important because if you don’t work as a team, no matter how much talent you have, you won’t ever win anything," she said.
