For Roger Barker, the spotlight on law enforcement for one night is gratifying.
“Being recognized with an awards ceremony and seeing the support from the community is very rewarding,” said Barker, Bay City police chief. “We as law enforcement see the negative aspect of the job. It is very rewarding to see the positive.”
The 33rd annual law enforcement dinner and award ceremony took place Friday night at Eagles Hall.
The hall was filled with law enforcement from around Matagorda County, including family and friends.
“This is the night that our community shows its appreciation to our law enforcement officers and peace officers for what they did for us all year,” said Haskell Simon, president of the 100 Club of Matagorda County.
This club has one purpose only and that is to recognize and support law enforcement officers and their families, he said.
Gary Mathis, Matagorda County sheriff, recognized officers in the sheriff’s department and thanked them for their ongoing dedication .
Eugene Davis, president for the Crisis Center, presented Bay City Police officers with the Crisis Center Award in recognition for the support in helping out at the center.
“This is an outstanding club because they provide us with the support we need to work every day in law enforcement,” said Chief Roger Barker of the Bay City Police Department.
Aside from monthly luncheons for law enforcements, the 100 Club of Matagorda County provides financial aid to the families of officers whose lives have been lost in the line of duty . The club also provides life-saving equipment for law enforcement and scholarships for those interested in attending a police academy.
