Freddy Rosas favorite number is 100. The 5-year-old spent the morning making a Froot Loops necklace, which he plans to eat after school.
“Maybe I will eat it during lunch,” said the kindergartner, who wore a paper crown that read “Happy 100 days of school.”
The students in Theresa Martinez’s class at Tenie Holmes Elementary, along with five other kindergarten classes, have been preparing for this day.
“This is a way for them to learn how to count. It is a daily math lesson,” she explained.
Part of the semester has been spent showing them daily lessons, preparing them for the significance of today.
“We make it a learning experience for them, as well as a fun day for them,” she said.
The students have brought in 100 small items, like pennies, or dry macaroni and they think of ways to shape them into the number, Martinez said.
Other students have brought stickers or cotton balls.
The students also celebrated the first 50 days of school, a midpoint to this big day, she said.
All this also means half of the year is gone, said Jessica Estlinbaum, principal of the school.
Most of the students in each classroom start a countdown from the first day of school, she said.
“It teaches them the days of the week, months and reinforces the concept of math,” she said.
This is an annual tradition that also ties in with their artwork and creativity, she explained.
“It is a fun day for them, and they look forward to it,” she said.
