Ladycats survive Falcons and bats for double-overtime win

BAY CITY – The Ladycats survived a ten-minute bat delay and double overtime to claim a 53-45 victory over Foster on Friday night.

It only took the Lady Falcons thirty seconds after the game got under way to put points on the board, as Lexi Fatheree connected on a short jump shot making it 2-0.

Bay City was not rattled and scored 10 unanswered points in a span of four minutes. The scoring spree was ignited by Chazmin Franklin when she found the bottom of the net with the jumper making it 2-2. Devan Price took care of the remainder of the scoring during the run which ended with a jumper and stretched the lead 10-2 with 3:21 remaining in the first period.

Foster weathered the storm and responded with a 4-point run, all credited to Taylor Cooper and cut the Ladycat lead to four with 2:25 to go in the opening quarter.

Endaca Stuart connected on a jump shot at the 2:12 mark which made it a 12-6.

The Lady Falcons held Bay City from scoring for the remainder of the quarter, but they were not finished putting points on the board. Kelsey King hit a jumper with :30 seconds left in the period as Foster pulled to within two, 12-10. Fatheree finished off the 5-point run at the start of the second period by making one of two free-throws which pulled the Lady Falcons to within a point.

A few minutes later, Price sparked a 6-point run for Bay City when she hit a 3-pointer with 6:36 remaining in the half. Price added a free-throw and a jumper and extended the lead 18-11.

Foster continued to fight back as they answered with a 5-point run which ended with a 3-pointer by King as the Lady Falcons pulled to within 2 points.

Price took the Ladycats to the locker room with a four point advantage after she capitalized on two shots from the charity stripe making it 20-16.

Both teams traded baskets for the first six minutes of the third quarter as Bay City maintained its 4-point advantage.

With 2:01 to go in the third, Fatheree started a 6-point run for the Lady Falcons with a layup. She finished off the run by connecting on a jumper as Foster claimed its first lead of the night 30-28 with :13 left in the period.

The Ladycats knotted the score within the first :45 seconds of the fourth quarter when Andrea Mayberry scored on a layup making it 30-30.

Both teams connected on layups and the score remained tied, 32-32. The Price took advantage of fouls committed by the Lady Falcons, going to the line twice, a making all four free-throws and Bay City reclaimed the lead 36-33 with 4:35 remaining in the game.

A few seconds later, strung together another 4-point run capped off by a free-throw from King and Foster stole the lead again, 37-36 with 2:46 left in the fourth quarter.

The Ladycats continued to fight and Stuart nailed a jumper to set off a 3-point run and Bay City jumped back on top 39-37 with just over 2:00 left in regulation.

Maya Flaniken tied the game 39-39 with :50 left in the game with a layup.

Bay City gained control of the ball with a few seconds remaining in regulation and Price launched the ball from just beyond half court and hit the backboard, but not the bottom of the net, sending the game to overtime.

Foster took an early lead in overtime when Flaniken connected on a jumper making it 41-39.

About thirty seconds later, the fans and players were overwhelmed by the presence of a bat that had made its way into the gym. Bay City administration and police officers cleared the fans and players from the gym as they tried to remove the bat. The game was delayed for about 10 minutes before played resumed with only the players, coaches, and officials in the gym.

Once play resumed with 3:17 remaining, Foster spread the floor on the offensive end and played keep away from the Ladycats. Bay City was forced to foul, but the Lady Falcons were unable to connect from the free-throw line allowing Bay City to hang around.

The Ladycats were able to get the ball in the hands of Price with a few seconds left in overtime and she was fouled while shooting with :02 to go in the game. Price hit both free-throws which made it 41-41 and forced a second overtime.

The second OT was dominated by Bay City as they took the lead early with layups from Price and Franklin which made it 45-41.

Flaniken nailed a jump shot which made a two point game, 45-43.

The Ladycats finally regained control of the game with an 8-point run which ended with a layup from Franklin with :45 left on the clock and stretching the lead to ten.

Foster added two more points from Jasmine Robinson in the last :03 of the game as they came up short in a hard-fought game.

Bay City’s Price led all scorers with 33 points on the night. The Lady Falcons had two in double digits, Fatheree with 16 and Flaniken with 11.
