Matagorda County and the Texas Comptroller’s have joined forces this year to help the community with unclaimed property with an unclaimed property search event.
“We are inviting everyone to come out to search for and claim what is rightfully theirs,” said Perez.
People searching for unclaimed funds, can normally go to the Texas Comptroller’s website and do a search, this is the first time the county has partnered with the state.
These are unclaimed funds like uncashed checks, royalties or bank account interest never claimed by someone, she said.
This unclaimed property is any financial asset that has been abandoned by the owner for one or more years, she added.
Matagorda County currently has $1,447,883 .40 of unclaimed money, she said.
The county treasurer staff and representatives from the Texas Comptroller office will be at the event to answer any questions.
Once the business or person has found unclaimed funds, they will be able to file a claim by providing their social security number and show proof of identification.
The state of Texas has more than $2 billion in unclaimed property that it is keeping safe until the rightful owners can claim it, she said.
When: Monday July 12 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: The event will take place at the Center for Energy Development at Wharton County Junior College.
What to bring: You do not have to show ID to search, but if you are filing a claim, you will need a picture ID and proof of social security number to speed up the approval process.
