While preparing for a recent service, God spoke something to me about manipulation. He said “The manipulator will be lonely.” It didn’t take me long to grasp what He meant. I have known manipulators – people that use anger, guilt or position to coerce people into doing what they want.

Manipulators have heaps of tactics, but the desired outcome is always the same. They want to use people for their own gratification. In the eyes of manipulators, others are tools to be used to achieve their goals. And while they often accomplish their objective, manipulators destroy relationships with people. One day they will realize their friends, and even family, have no desire to be around them. The “tools” get tired of being used and decide they’ve had enough.

Of course, it’s nearly impossible to prove to someone that they act this way. Most times, they have created an alternate reality that says they are victims of the selfishness of other people. Attempts to reveal a manipulator usually result in additional acts of manipulation.

It’s a vicious cycle that hurts everyone involved. So I ask, just like many of you, “What do you do about it?” First, break out of the Stockholm syndrome; stop being manipulated and start respecting your self.

The only way to properly do this is to discover who you were born to be – then believe that it’s true. Once you have your true identity firmly established, you will avoid manipulation and be a light that shines into the heart of the manipulator. Ultimately, the freedom you experience may lead the manipulator to change courses as well.

Your true identity lies in the heart of God. He made you with a plan and a purpose that only you can achieve. He is eager to have a relationship with you so that He can show you who you were born to be. It is incredibly liberating to go from manipulation to freedom.

One final thought: The thing that you focus on is the thing that organizes your life. Make your focus the Kingdom of God and He will organize your life. (Matt 6:33)
