The children at First Presbyterian Church gathered at the sanctuary for morning prayer and song on Tuesday morning.
A music video, titled “Vast Voyage,” begins to play on the big screen and the children rise and follow along.
Each morning, the camp begins with songs from a Bible camp video called, “High Seas Expedition,” adventures related to the sea with a biblical theme.
For the rest of the week the children will sing, participate in activities and crafts at vacation Bible school.
“It has the atmosphere of a summer camp, the only difference is we incorporate the word of God,” said Karen Hill, vacation bible school director for First Presbyterian Church.
Camp includes bible story time, crafts, games, a snack and lots of singing, said Hill.
The camp teaches Bible verses and a bible point that is emphased each day, she said.
The community outreach program is offered to anyone who wants to learn about the Bible.
The camp registered about 90 children this summer ages 3-to-11 years old.
“Some children don’t have a home church of their own, this is the only way to expose them to God,” she said.
Having Bible camp is important because having this energy and enthusiasm and openness to new things to God is a shot in the arm for the church and for the kids, said Mark Stouv, pastor of First Presbyterian Church.
“I have a heart for kids and ministering for them at bible camp is a wonderful thing,” he said.
Summer camp has been offered at the church for more than 20 years and is a way for children to get together and learn about Jesus, said Hill.
This summer, the church combined the summer camp with First Baptist Church in Bay City.
“We combined efforts because both churches had the camp on the same days, with the same theme,” Hill said. “Instead of competing with the church, we will have one successful bible camp.”
A lot of the kids make the rounds from Bible school to Bible school. This church provides the word of God in a cool way regardless, said Stouv.
They may not think they are getting anything out of it, but every child here walks away with having learned something, he said.
“My hope is that they leave this place with the love of God and have experienced God’s grace and God’s welcome and have a better understanding of who Jesus is in their life,” he said.
