Work Day

The Van Vleck Volunteer Fire Department will have a regular business meeting on August 2 from 7p.m. at the firehouse in Van Vleck. All interested volunteers are encouraged to attend.

Compassionate meeting

Anyone who has had a child die in their family is invited to an informal meeting, on August 3 at 7p.m. at the Civic Center, Rm 106, with the intent of eventually establishing a local chapter of the Compassionate Friends. Palacios Market Days will be held the second Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at East Bay Park off of Business 35. Community wide Christian Adult Singles group will meet every Thursday at 7 p.m. The group is hosted by St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Bay City. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2438 of Bay City and its Ladies Auxiliary meet once a month on the second Tuesday at 7 p.m. Game night is every Thursday evening at 6. American Legion Post 11

Amercian Legion Post 11 meets every fourth Thursday of every month at the American Legion Hall, 2106 Cottonwood. Pot Luck at 6:30p.m, meeting at 7p.m. For more information call 245-0111.

Assistance program

For the Love of Animals Rescue Group has an assistance program to help defray the cost of spay/neutering your pets for qualified owners. If you would like to volunteer come join the club, they meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Bay City Service Center from 6:30 – 8 p.m.

Alanon meetings

Alanon is for family and friends of problem drinkers. Meetings are on Monday nights starting, at 7 p.m. at 2701 Ave. H.

Support group

The Matagorda County Crisis Center Support group meets every Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the center by the Peach Street entrance. For more information call B.J. Wise, group facilitator, before 2:30 p.m. at 979-245-9109.

Project Rio

Project Rio is an employment service program specifically for ex-offenders. The Texas Workforce Commission in cooperation with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Youth Commission provides special services designed to reintegrate ex-offenders into the workforce. Crime Stoppers

Matagorda County Crime Stoppers needs the public’s help in solving crimes. Anyone with information about a crime in Matagorda County is asked to call 1-800-299-BUST (2878). Information leading to a felony arrest and/or a grand jury indictment may earn the caller a cash reward. Callers to Crime Stoppers do not have to give their names.

Outreach program

Friends of Elder Citizens Inc. is now accepting reservations for individuals 60-years and older to receive well-balanced meals Monday through Friday at noon. Available at 705 Commerce St. in Palacios. Transportation is provided to and from the senior center. Meals on Wheels service is available for those unable to come to the center. Weatherization program

Community Action Committee of Victoria is accepting applications for the weatherization program in Matagorda County. The program can install measures to reduce energy usage in low-income residences. To request an application call 361-578-2989 or toll free at 1-800-365-7712.

Reading lab

The Adult Reading Lab is a computerized program that allows people who need help learning to read or improving their skills work at their own pace while they practice language and reading skills. The lab is open every Monday and Tuesday night from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cherry Elementary School, 2619 8th St. For more information, call Rick Carlin at 979-245-5766.

Laboratory health screening

Matagorda County Hospital District offers monthly laboratory health screenings at reduced rates. Screenings will be offered the third Thursday of each month from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. For additional information contact the laboratory department at 979-241-6714. No appointment is necessary.
