Dear Editor,

Bay City and Matagorda County have to do some serious “soul searching.” As we recently witness the high school graduation ceremonies of all four high schools in the county which includes Bay City, I am struck by a disturbing contradiction. Often I have heard people in this community say that part of our problem is that our best and brightest students leave this community never to return again. Indeed, we like many small rural communities suffer from “brain drain.” One of the challenges which now face the local leadership is how to change this trend of mass exodus of intelligentsia.

As the citizens of Bay City prepare to return to the polls to select the next mayor, what message will we send this year’s class of high school graduates? Mark Bricker is the epitome of a local graduate that left to get his college education with the desire to return to his roots to make a positive contribution. (After all, isn’t this what we want other students to do?) However, instead of Mark Bricker being applauded for his efforts, some want to cast doubt on his qualifications. So, are we saying to our youth and to the next generation, “we want you to return to Bay City but not while you are young, motivated and productive?” The voters of Bay City now have a unique opportunity to let this year’s crop of high school graduates know how they truly feel about their returning to this community.
