Heidi Simmons is a fan of the Houston Astros.
So when she received a call from an Astros representative, she thought it was a joke.
“It was a surprised to me that someone from the Astros would call,” said the director of tourism for Matagorda County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Thanks to an advertisement the season sales representative saw in the Texas Highways magazine, he decided to give her a call. He offered to host Bay City night at Minute Maid Park on Monday, August 30.
This is a great opportunity for the city and Matagorda County to be on the map, she said.
The Houston Astros will face the St. Louis Cardinals on Bay City night. Discounted tickets for 500 area residents will be available for purchase through the website.
Irene Bishop, vice president of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce, Matagorda County Judge Nate McDonald and mayor Mark Bricker will participate in the pre-game festivities in the field.
This event is a direct result of how hard the visitor’s bureau board members have worked to get the area on the map, she said.
As tourism director Simmons responsibilities include traveling to different locations and act as the liaison between all the communities and inform them of what amenities the county offers.
“Them inviting us and hosting a night for us at one of the largest cities in Texas, is proof we are doing our job,” she said.
