South Texas Project held its annual leadership conference last week at the Bay City Civic Center. Managers and supervisors, along with local officials, attended the conference.

The theme of the conference was “The Course to Excellence” featuring updates on the future construction of units 3 and 4 and a look at accomplishments made during the past 20 years of commercial operation were noted.

“The project remains on schedule with a commercial operation date for Unit 3 of 2016 and for Unit 4 of 2017,” said Buddy Eller, director of communication and public affairs.

The site will have preconstruction activities later in the year, but no official construction until the Combined Operating License is issued, he said.

The combined license is expected to be issued in early 2012.

“We have several key activities taking place to prepare the site for the actual construction like the movement of some warehouses and working on a draining ditch,” said Eller.

One of the next critical steps is continued discussion with the Department of Energy regarding federal loan guarantees. This is a critical milestone for the project, he said.

Keynote speaker for the conference was Kristine L. Svinicki, commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, who gave an overview of the role of the NRC and its guiding principles.

She focused on the safe and reliable operations of the nation’s commercial nuclear fleet and the need for new nuclear as part of the nation’s long-term energy future.

Ed Halpin, president and CEO of STP gave a special presentation to County Judge Nate McDonald and Matagorda Regional Medical Center CEO Steve Smith and presented each with the company's annual payment to the hospital district of $562,553 and $3,085,921 to the county.
