Ashley Montoya had been waiting all season long. The smile on her face told her story.

“I am very excited to play on the field,” the sophomore shortstop said. “I am just pumped to go out there and step on the field.”

Although the Ladycats have already practiced on the field, Montoya is looking forward to their first official game.

Grand opening ceremonies took place on Tuesday night after the Lady Cats Junior softball game took the field.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and the first pitch by school board president Paul Johnson took place.

For left fielder Brianna Payne, playing in the new field means not having to worry about using someone else’s field.

“This is our first official home game in our own field,” said Payne.

The Ladycats have been playing softball games at the league field, she said.

“Now we have our very own field and we can play without having to worry and even practice here,” she said.

The planning stages of the field began in July. Because of delays caused by rainy weather, the grand opening had been pushed back.

The state-of-the-art facility includes dugouts, stands, a press box, concession stand and a scoreboard. The field is also handicapped accessible.

The field sits 300 spectators and has enough space outside the field where people can bring their lawn chairs and enjoy the game from there, said superintendent Keith Brown.

The price for the field was $521,000.

“I think it’s outstanding and it is a beautiful facility,” Brown said.

“This gives future softball players an opportunity to look out at the filed and encourage them and say ‘Someday I can play too,’” he said.
