The removal of walls has begun.
The old flooring in the classrooms has also been removed.
The goal is to make one large computer room that will be part of the after-school program at the Boys and Girls Club.
But to continue construction, more money needs to be raised.
On Monday, the Matagorda County Community Foundation donated a $22,500 grant to be given to the club in three-year installments of $7,500. This is a grant In support of the operating capital needs of the club.
“We thought this was a well worth project because it is utilizing a piece of asset from the school district that was being unutilized,” said John S. Runnells III, president of Matagorda County Community Foundation.
Pierce Elementary sits on several lots of land donated by the Runnells family.
The elementary school was named after Runnells great, great grandmother.
The foundation was formed in 1984 and develops and administers trusts, annuities, memorials and special funds to support cultural, economic, educational and social purposes.
By creating a Boys and Girls Club it satisfies a valuable service to the community, Runnells said.
It serves a need for an after school program as well as serving children that need this kind of environment, he said.
Students need good positive support after school where they might not get it at home or other programs, he stated.
“The Boys and Girls club have nationally served that. My father was a strong supporter of the Boys and Girls Club,” he said.
So far, the club has raised approximately $200,000 for building renovation and has approximately $65,000, plus an additional $45,000 in 3 to 5 year pledges for the Founders Campaign.
The club renovations will also include a learning center, an arts and craft room and offices for staff and the executive director.
The cost to open the club is approximately $225,000 to renovate the space and $75,000 for furniture, fixtures and equipment.
“We are grateful that the foundation has supported the operating capital needs of the club,” said Janet Peden, Boys & Girls Club Board President.
If everyone in this community would do the same to help the club, then so much could be done for the kids of the area, she added.
“We need others to do the same. We can have a meaningful impact on the life of the youth we will serve,” she said.
