The Bay City Blackcats knew they needed a good effort at the plate to have a chance against Foster pitcher Christian DeLeon. The senior right-hander, coming off a no-hitter and 11-1 win over El Campo, is a returning all-district hurler and the pitcher who stopped the Blackcats’ 12-game winning streak against the Falcons last season, dating back to 2006.
The Cats got the effort they needed with the bats, wrapping out 10 hits and four runs, but for the second district contest in a row, the defense let them down.
Foster scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh on four Blackcat errors to steal a 5-4 win and improve to 2-0 in District 23-4A play. The Cats dropped to 8-6 and 0-2 in district.
Foster’s five runs were all unearned, and, combined with the three unearned runs Bay City gave up against Lamar Consolidated last week in a 3-2 loss, the Blackcats have not allowed an earned run in the first 14 innings of district play.
Starter A.J. Flores worked into the fifth before he was lifted with two outs due to a toe injury. Jacob Lara came in and threw one pitch and a ground ball to close the books on Flores’ night. The junior pitcher allowed only one hit in the gutsy effort.
Lara walked the first batter of the sixth and then coaxed a ground ball that was booted by Flores at second. Lara then struck out the next two Falcons, before a single plated a run to make it 4-1.
A routine grounder to shortstop was thrown into the dugout to lead off the bottom half of the seventh. Then another errant throw by the shortstop on the next play plated Foster’s second run to make it 4-2. Foster’s Kyle Raper then bunted for a single, but a wild throw from third made it 4-3. Mike Konvicka then drilled a double, only the third hit of the night for the Falcons, to make it 4-4. A single to right field by Ryan Bledsoe gave Foster the victory before the Blackcats ever recorded an out.
Bay City will try to get on the winning side with a 7 p.m. contest at Terry, Friday. The Cats finish the first round of district play at home March 24 against El Campo.
