The Bay City Blackcats have only played two home games at Arthur Stewart field during the first 16 games of the season; and, if results are any indication, the Cats would just as well play the remainder of their schedule on the road.

Blackcat bats were silenced at home again, this time my El Campo’s Chris Quinn. The Alvin Community College signee struck out 12 and scattered six hits in going the distance in a 14-3 district win.

Bay City (9-7) drops to 1-3 in district after the first round finale, while the Ricebirds (10-4) improve to 2-1 in District 23-4A. El Campo finishes the first round Friday with a contest against Lamar Consolidated.

Defense, or lack of, quickly put the Cats behind in the first. Two errors lead to two runs, along with singles my Landon Appling and Gregory Rod that plated two more to give the Birds a 4-0 lead.

The Cats loaded the bases in the bottom half and plated a run on a bases loaded walk, but Quinn found his groove to end the thread by striking out LaDarian Stone to end the first.

El Campo put up three more in the second on a trio of doubles. Bay City made it 7-2 in the bottom half on a DJ Domiguez run-scoring single.

Starter AJ Flores (3-2) pitched a scoreless third before being lifted for junior Daniel Green. Green put up zeros in the fourth and fifth before running into trouble in the sixth. Waylon Malone led off with a hit batsman, then Quinn singled for his third knock of the night. An Appling RBI single and sacrifice fly by Michael Van Gorp increased the lead to 11-3. The Birds tacked on three more in the seventh on a three-run homer.

Bay City returns to district action March 30 at Lamar Consolidated.

Landgrebe helped his cause at the plate with two hits, while Stone had a pair of hits, including an RBI double. Flores drove in a run with a single.
