Kevin Landgrebe pitched five strong innings of three-hit baseball and drove in three runs on four hits of his own to keep the Bay City Blackcats in the thick of the District 23-4A with an impressive 10-4 win over previously unbeaten Lamar Consolidated.
The Cats (10-7, 2-3) are tied with El Campo after the Ricebirds suffered a 1-0 loss Tuesday night at the hands of Foster. Lamar Consolidated and Foster are both 4-1.
“We cut down our strikeouts and put the ball in play and good things happened,” said head coach Robert Rayos. “Kevin pitched a heck of a game and did it at the plate as well.”
The Mustangs made it 1-0 in the first after a walk, balk and fielder’s choice plated a run.
Bay City would take the lead in the third when Andrew Pena led off with a double. His brother Adrian, doing what twins do, followed suit with another double to drive in a run and tie the score. A.J. Flores then executed a sacrifice bunt to move Pena to third, and Landgrebe put the Cats up 2-1 with an RBI single.
Lamar Consolidated would answer in the fourth when senior Cody Abraham doubled to lead off the inning. A sacrifice fly by Fernando Pena moved Abraham to third, then catcher Matt Ditman lined a curveball into left field to tie the game at 2-2.
The Cats would take the lead for good in the sixth when they loaded the bases with no outs. Andrew Pena made it 3-2 on an RBI single, then a wild pitch made it 4-2. Landgrebe’s third hit of the night made it 5-2 and a Mustang error closed out the scoring at 6-2.
Reliever Jacob Lara pitched a scoreless sixth for the Cats.
Bay City tacked on four more runs in the top half of the seventh. RBI singles by Adrian Pena and Landgrebe made it 10-2.
Lamar Consolidated loaded the bases in the bottom half of the seventh. A two-run single by Abraham made it 10-4 before Lara coaxed two fly balls to end the game and earn his third save of the year.
“We are a different team when we play defense,” said Rayos. “We have been getting solid pitching all year, and tonight was no different. Plus, four hits from the bottom of the order put us in position to score all night.”
Lara had an admirable night at the plate as well with a double and single. The Pena twins had a pair of hits apiece.
Bay City returns to action at home tonight with a 7 p.m. contest against Foster, then catches Terry (0-4) at home Tuesday, April 6.
