This past Friday the Leopards traveled to Sinton to play District 31 AA champion Jourdnaton in the area round of the playoffs. Sinton provided a nice facility for a playoff game as Jourdanton was the home team. Both crowds braved what looked like impending rain but they stands were still packed with supporters from both sides.Van Vleck wasted no time getting on the board first. Will McGonagle led off the game with a single and advanced to third as the catcher missed two balls. Kade Kucera grounded out to 2nd to plate McGonagle to put the lead at 1-0. Doogie Van Wie, Adrian Martinez and Josh Lankston all singled to load the bases with one out. Chet Champion then ripped a line drive that was snagged by the shortstop who then doubled Martinez off of 2nd base to end the threat. Kade Kucera took the mound and walked the lead off batter. But the threat was short lived as Van Wie threw the runner out trying to get to 2nd and Kucera got out of the inning with no harm and the lead stayed at 1-0. After going harmlessly in the 2nd, Van Vleck held a 1-0 but the Indians battled back with some clutch hitting and some untimely errors to get across an unearned run to get back to 1-1. Van Wie then led off the 3rd with his 2nd hit of the night and he was replaced on the base paths by Tyler Nunley. Martinez then laced a double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Lankston then plated Nunley with a single and Champion brought in Lankston with a hit of his own and the Leopards now led 3-1. With the Lep defense still shaky, Jourdanton managed to get two runners on with two outs before getting a double to left center. Howeverm left fielder Brandon Garay hit McGonagle with a great throw then McGonagle turned and threw a strike to Van Wie to get the 2nd runner out at the plate and the Leps still held a 3-2 lead going into the 4th. Ty Folmar led off the 4th and was hit by a pitch and he advanced to 2nd on a passed ball. McGonagle then walked to put runners at first and 2nd before another past ball put Folmar at 3rd. Kucera then hit another ground out to score Folmar before Van Wie singled yet again scoring McGonagle to put Van Vleck up 5-2. That would be all Kucera would need as he cruised through the next few innings. Van Vleck added another run in the 5th as Lankston smashed a double to deep center and then came home on a single by Champion. Van Wie then got his fourth hit of the night in the 6th and courtesy runner Nunley scored on another past ball to end the scoring at 7-2. Kucera then struck out the last batter to end the game. Kucera ended the night with 9 strike outs. Dane Evans also added a hit as the Leopards tallied 14 hits on the night. Van Vleck is now 15-13 on the year and will play district champion Danbury in a best of three series beginning Thursday night at Brazosport. Danbury defeated George West in the playoffs and is also the defending state champion for 2A.
