Palacios coach Mike Treybig is happy with the numbers.
The Sharks have 63 players participating and will complete for one of three playoff spts in a five-team District 29-3A.
“This is the most players we’ve ever had since I’ve been here,” said Trybig, who is beginning his fifth season at Palacios. “It helps with depth.”
Trybig points out the last time Palacios was in a five-team district was in 2007, which is also the last time it advanced to postseason play.
“Realistically, you win two games and you’re in,” Trybig said.
Trybig sees Sweeny and Needville as the favorites, likely leaving the Sharks, Wharton and Columbia to battle for third.
“The numbers tell you there’s five teams so you’ve got a better chance,” said Wharton coach Stacy Hunt. “I think losing (Brookshire) Royal from our old district makes it easier.”
The Tigers return a majority of starters from a team that was one win away from the playoffs.
“We have to eliminate turnovers,” Hunt said. “We had way too many turnovers and penalties. I’m hoping with experience we’ll outgrow some of that.”
Trybig will also have an experienced team, but will have to fill some critical positions.
“Most of the guys we have back on offense are in the offensive line and at receiver,” Trybig said. “We have our quarterback back, but our fullbacks and tailbacks are inexperienced. The key is having those backs develop.
