Sweeny quarterback Tre Lemon’s 27-yard TD pass to Levi Holmes with 2:00 to go culminated a nine-play, 73-yard drive that gave the Bulldogs a 14-7 win over Bay City in the season opener at Memorial Stadium.
The late-game heroics gave the Bulldogs their first win over Bay City, dating back to 1996 and 1997 when Sweeny enjoyed their lone stint in the 4A ranks when both schools were district foes. Bay City won 14-7 a year ago, their only win in 2009.
For the night, Lemon was 8 of 15 for 112 yards with two TDs, one rushing, and two interceptions.
Bay City drew first blood after a scoreless first half. After Sweeny returned the second half kickoff to the 50 yard line, the Blackcat defense held stiff when a 43-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.
Bay City got the ball at their own 26 and proceeded to eat up 4:00 of the clock on an 11-play drive that put them up 7-0 when quarterback Derek Brown hit Jalen Dykes on a 25-yard TD pass, his fourth consecutive completion of the drive. Rey Lopez’s added the PAT.
Dykes is the son of former Blackcat Hart Lee Dykes, a standout at Oklahoma State and the NFL’s New England Patriots.
The Blackcat defense continued to put pressure on Sweeny, coaxing a fumble that Bay City’s Karl Brown recovered at the midfield just :51 later. However, a quick three-and-out by the Blackcat offense gave the ball back to Sweeny.
The Blackcat defense continued to shine when Juan Evangelista sacked Lemon on 3rd and 3 to start the fourth quarter, but a sluggish offense quickly gave the ball back to the Bulldogs.
Sweeny’s run-oriented offense held the ball for nearly 30 minutes of the 48-minute contest, but it wasn’t until the 7:55 mark of the 4th quarter that they found the end zone for the first time. A nine-yard TD run by Lemon, set up by a Darius Brown interception at the Blackcat 33, tied the game at 7-7.
On the ensuing kickoff, Da’Jon Davidson returned the ball 70 yards to the Bulldog 20, but Bay City gave the ball back on downs after a sack of Brown and two incompletions, a stretch of eight consecutive in the second half.
Brown finally broke the drought when he found Jermany Williams on a short pass that turned in to a 60-yard gain to the Bulldog 20 on a potential game-tying drive with 1:43 to go. However, the threat ended on 4th and 13 when a pass from Brown to Dykes was broken up in the end zone with :03 left.
Brown finished the night 13 of 27 for 167 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. The Blackcats amassed 253 yards of total offense. Sweeny gained 271 total yards.
Bay City returns home Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Jack Yates High School, a 30-19 winner over Houston Washington in their opener.
