So it's no secret I moved to Bay City the second my editor offered me the job. It was an opportunity of a lifetime. Editor of a newspaper? It's like someone asking me to jump and then me asking, "How high?"
My journey to the Victoria Advocate family started over the summer of last year. My dream of becoming a daily reporter was about to come true. I had a phone interview, then a two day interview where I met with all of the reporters and I even had an assignment. You can read my very first article with the Victoria Advocate HERE. I am so proud of it, I have it framed. Weird? No, I have my New York Times rejection letter framed as well.
After a few weeks of no sleep, no eating, anxiety, nail biting, and waiting impatiently for a call back to see if I'd gotten the job - I finally got the call. I was told I did not get the job, but if I was interested in applying for the editor position at their sister newspaper. Sister paper? Matagorda huh?
"Think about it and call me tomorrow," Chris said.
After doing a search on Google for the newspaper and calling the office (anonymously) to get more information on the paper, I knew I was ready.
The next day, I said yes, would love to interview.
A few days later I drove to Victoria, checked in to the hotel and drove to the VicAd office. Chris, who I had only met once before at my last interview, drove us an hour to Bay City.
I was so nervous, didn't know what to expect. Got to the office, met with the staff, we had lunch. Then Chris drove us back to Victoria.
The next day, I got a call. "You got the job," he said. I wanted to yell from the top of my lungs and say, "I will be right there!" But I knew there had to be a process.
So I kissed my part-time reporter job in the Valley good bye and off I went into the sunset. By Sunday night, I was living in a hotel in Bay City and waiting for my journalism career to begin.
A week later, found a two-bedroom apartment. Way too much for me. So back to the original thought of what this entry is all about, I am moving to a one bedroom apartment this weekend! It has hardwood floors and yes, it's enough for just one person.
My parents will visit this weekend and help with the move. Although, I can just pack everything I have in a handful of boxes. I still have no living room furniture, no bookshelf for my books and not even a dresser. No, I don't sleep on the floor, I have a memory foam mattress.
So hopefully the move will be a good one and fun one. Wish me luck!
